WORKING WITHOUT A WORK PERMIT
For some international students, earning a little extra money while in Canada can go a long way towards paying bills and ensuring educational costs are met. There are a number of programs for you, and your spouse if they accompany you, to work while you study in Canada.
Everyone will have their own needs, so the program that’s right for one person, may not be for another. That’s why we take the time to get to know why you want to work during your study period in Canada and how that will work with your education. Getting to know you is the best way to find the right solution.
Work after graduation
It’s important to note that those who fall in love with Canada while they study here may want to stay in the country longer. There is a Post-Graduation Work Permit to help these individuals. It’s one of the many ways Canada is inviting more immigrants into the country who have decided Canada is a place they enjoy and can excel. With this permit, you can work full-time to a maximum of three years after your graduation.
Dependent work permit
If your spouse has come with you to Canada, they may be eligible for an open work permit. Their work permit will be valid for the same time period as your study permit. For your partner to be eligible, you have to meet a number of criteria such as having a valid study permit.
Given the various requirements, we suggest potential students talk to us about their study goals and the desires their spouse may have, before contacting schools.
Work on Campus
Working on campus can be the ideal opportunity for international students to make extra money, get to know their community and meet others. You can work on the school’s campus for up to 20 hours a week, but you will have to apply for a social insurance number and be a registered full-time student.
Work off Campus
For more work options and greater earning potential, some students want to work off-campus. An off-campus work permit allows for part-time work during semesters and full-time work between them. You must be studying in a program of at least six months that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate.
Work as a co-op student
Co-op students are those who work as interns or co-op students within their study program as part of the curriculum. Work placement opportunities are a mandatory part of these education programs, but a work permit specific to this is still required.
