FEDERAL SKILLED TRADES PROGRAM
This program is focused on individuals who work in specific trades and want permanent residency in Canada. An individual must be at skill type B within their trade to qualify.
Fit for this stream depends upon work experience, education and abilities with English and/or French. To be eligible you must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Work Experience:
- A minimum 2 years full-time or part-time (3,120 hours) paid work in a skilled trade within 5 years of submitting application
- Applicant must have performed both the actions described in the lead statement and a substantial number of the main duties listed in the NOC description of the occupation
- Skilled Trades currently eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades program fall into the following categories of the NOC:
- Major Group 72: industrial, electrical and construction trades,
- Major Group 73: maintenance and equipment operation trades,
- Major Group 82: supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production,
- Major Group 92: processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators,
- Minor Group 632: chefs and cooks, and
- Minor Group 633: butchers and bakers.
- Applicants must have an offer of employment in Canada that:
- Is for at least one year of full-time work at skill level B in one of the eligible occupations
OR
- A Certificate of Qualification in the trade from a provincial, territorial or federal body.
- Education Requirements:
- There is no education requirement under FST, but, you can improve your points ranking with a Canadian secondary or post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree OR a completed foreign credential with an educational credential assessment (ECA) for immigration purposes report from an agency approved by IRCC that is less than five years old.
- Language Requirements
- Meet the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of at least level 5 in listening and speaking and level 4 in reading and writing
- Language test results must not be more than two years old at the time of application.
- Settlement Funds:
Applicants must show proof of sufficient settlement funds to support themselves and their dependents once they arrive in Canada. Applicants under this program are NOT required to show the proof of settlement funds if:
They are currently able to legally work in Canada, AND They have a valid job offer from an employer in Canada.
